5 THINGS TO WATCH

- SCOTT CRUICKSHANK, CALGARY HERALD

1. BERRA STARTS:

G Reto Berra (1-2-0, 3.33 GAA, .895 save percentage) gets the nod, his fourth in the past five games ... With goalie fighting hotly debated in the aftermath of Ray Emery’s pummelling of Braden Holtby, Berra was asked for his opinion. “Normally, nobody’s doing that in Europe,” said the Swiss netminder. “To protect players, maybe it’s good (to outlaw goalie scraps). But fans like it.” What would you do if you saw Emery coming down the ice? “Hard to say,” he said, laughing. “Maybe if we were losing and I was already angry, maybe I would go. But if we were winning and I had good feelings? No.”

2. SHARK TALES:

San Jose is coming off a 5-4 overtime loss Sunday in Winnipeg. “We had the lead a bunch of different times and we gave up a tying goal as many times,” D Dan Boyle told reporters. ... Somehow, the Sharks are winless in five (0-1-4) ... They are the top-scoring outfit in the league, averaging 3.65 goals per outing (Calgary is 12th in that particular department).

3. LUCKY NO. 13:

Yes, it had been probably just a coincidence that LW Michael Cammalleri’s season debut — Oct. 21 in Los Angeles — took place in front of two dozen scouts. A flashy veteran in the final year of his contract, Cammalleri continues to impress. The sharpshooting flanker has produced 10 points, including seven markers, in 10 appearances. “Cammy has been unbelievable,” said coach Bob Hartley. One of the fittest veterans at camp, the 31-year-old missed the opening seven games with a hand injury. No matter. He’s feeling it now.

4. CENTRES OF ATTENTION:

Three young centres (Sean Monahan, 19; Joe Colborne, 23; Mikael Backlund, 24) continue to fight (each other) for ice time. If, say, Colborne receives 16 or more minutes, that’s coming out of someone else’s workload. C Matt Stajan, meanwhile, gets his 19 minutes per night. “Staje has many jobs, many roles, with us,” said Hartley. “After him, we have three very young centremen. Those guys, they battle for roles.” On the upswing? Backlund. “I could tell the last couple games, his skating was back,” said Hartley.

5. PROSPECT IN TROUBLE:

Vancouver Giants D Brett Kulak, 19, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, stemming from a summer house party. Flames GM Jay Feaster’s statement Sunday: “While we don’t condone the behaviour associated with these charges, the Calgary Flames organization continues to support Brett as he moves through the legal process and we learn more about the incident.” Kulak goes to court Nov. 20.
