Canadian music icon Joni Mitchell in hospital

-

Legendary Canadian singer- songwriter Joni Mitchell is in intensive care in a Los Angeles hospital, TMZ reported Tuesday.

Paramedics went to Mitchell’s home in Los Angeles Tuesday after a 911 call reported an unconscious woman, the website said.

Reports said she became responsive on her way to hospital.

Mitchell’s official Twitter account verified her hospitalization Tuesday evening.

“Joni has been hospitalized. We are awaiting official word on her condition and will post it here as soon as we know,” a tweet said.

Mitchell, 71, has won eight Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Among her most notable songs are Big Yellow Taxi and Woodstock. Her bestselling album, Court and Spark, which was released in 1974, featured the hit Free Man in Paris.

Mitchell suffers from a rare skin condition called Morgellons. The condition confined her to her home, she said.

Mitchell was born in Fort Macleod on Nov. 7, 1943, and moved with her family to North Battleford, Sask., after the Second World War and then to Saskatoon during the early 1950s.

At age 9, she contracted polio. As she convalesced, she developed an artistic sensitivity, Mitchell says on her website.

After high school, Mitchell spent one year at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary. She become a regular performer at a Calgary club called The Depression.

“My childhood longing mostly was to be a painter, yet before I went to art college my mother said to me that my stick- to- it- iveness in certain things was never that great, and she said ‘ you’re going to get to art college and you’re going to get distracted,’” Mitchell says on her website. “When I got there, however, it seemed that a lot of the courses were meaningless to me and not particularly creative. And so, at the end of the year I said to my mother: ‘ I’m going to Toronto to be a folksinger.’ And I fulfilled her prophecy.”
