Grow eye- popping peonies

-

Linda Braun and Laurie Goetting are passionate about peonies.

They’ll share their enthusiasm and tips for growing this garden showstopper at their presentation Saturday at 1 p. m. at the Calgary Horticultural Society’s Garden Show.

A heritage plant, peonies are large, vigorous perennials that are good for Calgary gardens, Braun says.

“They survive our winter and will flourish every year as long as they’re taken care of and planted properly,” she says.

“They are resistant to deer and rabbits. If planted well, they can live 20 years or more.”

During their presentation Braun and Goetting will explain how to plant a peony so it will grow and thrive.

Once established, peonies don’t need a lot of water and come in a tremendous range of colours, shapes and styles.

If gardeners choose wisely, they can enjoy a long blooming period with a diversity of peonies from the May long weekend until the week after the close of the Calgary Stampede, Braun says.
