STARTUP OF THE WEEK Therm Fit’s muscle rollers turn up heat on sore body

Muscle rollers help break down adhesions or scar tissue, improve mobility and lengthen and stretch sore muscles. Therapists typically use them on patients in conjunction with a continuous heating process, as heat aids with increased blood flow and the flush of lactic acid.

ThermFit combines a muscle roller and heat therapy into one tangible product in the most convenient and effective way possible. Users input their desired temperature and within seconds the muscle roller goes from ambient to the desired output.

ThermFit doesn’t require an external heating source. Plus, there’s no risk of burning as you have full control of the unit with just a push of a button. Should the muscle roller overheat, an automated system cuts off the power.

Here’s more from company founder and CEO Jamie Salih:

Q How did you come up with the idea for your startup? Was there an “ah-ha” moment?

A Growing up playing competitive sports, I noticed coaches and trainers always place great emphasis on injury prevention and proper recovery practices. These practices stuck with me as I diverted my attention to the fitness industry. I’ve always been a “tech geek,” fascinated with the latest gadgets and innovations. My passions in tech and fitness we’re the driving forces in developing the world’s first temperature regulated muscle roller.

Our “ah-ha moment” happened after our first meeting with The Forzani Group. They were immediately interested because our product was tapping into a growing trend within the sporting goods industry.

Q What’s been the biggest challenge so far? What have you done to solve it?

A Capital-intensive production through injection moulding has been a challenge. We’re currently investigating different ways to reduce these costs including partnerships with manufacturers.

Q Are there any key individuals outside of your organization who have been of great help to your startup?

A The entire entrepreneurship program at Mount Royal University has given us so much support, mentorship and guidance. The program helps you transform business ideas into market opportunities. The director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Ray DePaul, has been a key factor in our success thus far. Mark Lafave of Mount Royal University has also been of huge help as he was able to give us his insight into athletic therapy and the overall practices and make invaluable connections.

Q What’s new with your startup that we can share?

A We’re partnering with Jeff Compton, a strength and conditioning coach who has worked with several NHL teams including the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars, New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators.

Q What advice would you like to share with others just starting out?

A You have to step outside your comfort zone. I’ve never been a fan of networking events or presenting in front of big audiences, but I knew if I wanted ThermFit Tech to gain traction, I had to step outside my comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to fail. You can’t be paralyzed by the fear of failure, you truly have to jump in with both feet. Find the right partners. It took me a while to find someone with the right technical skills to handle the development side of things.

Q What made you choose to go down the path of entrepreneurship?

A Both (chief operating officer) Jesse Pauls and I have long been intrigued by the thought of building a company that provides value, and entrepreneurship offers the ultimate blank canvas to do just that.

Q What do you and your startup need help with?

A We’d love to talk with anyone who has overseas manufacturing and distribution experience. Please contact us at thermfittech. com.
