He’s no rookie at being blue

Peter Mooney on his role as Nick Collins

- MELISSA HANK

As a guy who once was the lead in a production of Romeo and Juliet, Peter Mooney knows on a Shakespearean level that love can stink. And it’s no different for Mooney’s character on Rookie Blue, police officer Nick Collins.

Nick hasn’t tragically poisoned himself in a crypt — so far — but the former soldier has had his share of love fails. His ex-girlfriend Gail (Charlotte Sullivan), turned out to be a lesbian, subsequent flame Andy (Missy Peregrym), reunited with her ex, and his current love interest, Juliet (Erin Karpluk), just joined him in 15 Division and could be doing some shifty undercover work.

“That’s going to complicate things for Nick in a lot of ways,” says Mooney. “And early in the season there’s an episode where we’re go- ing to learn a little bit more about Nick’s past from well before 15 Division, well before Afghanistan. That’ll be a whole other thing for Nick to deal with as well.”

The homegrown series returned for its sixth season this week on Global, picking up a month after the explosion in the Season 2 finale. Viewers down south will only discover the fallout of that explosion when the sudsy police show returns to ABC on June 25.

“It was such a bomb — literally and figuratively — that the whole station’s spinning in the aftermath and trying to figure out what’s going on,” says Mooney. “And that’s actually going to extend into the season this year.”

Also this season, fans will find out what effect Marlo’s (Rachael Ancheril), pregnancy will have on Sam (Ben Bass), and Andy’s burgeoning romance.

Mooney, a Winnipegborn actor, has appeared on several notable Canadian series — teen soap Falcon Beach, the action-packed Republic of Doyle and family drama Heartland among them.

Currently crowding his CV is an upcoming arc on a little series called Heroes Reborn, the NBC revival of its hit Heroes, which aired from 2006 to 2010.

He can’t say much about that show — one imagines Hiro (Masi Oka), teleporting to Canada to stop any spoilers — but Heroes Reborn will air this fall as a 13- episode event series. Several stars from the original series will revive roles, including Oka, Greg Grunberg and Jack Coleman.
