Stars’ friendship helps make sci-fi believable

Actresses share Tomorrowland scenes with George Clooney

- BOB THOMPSON

Before Tomorrowland, Britt Robertson and Raffey Cassidy didn’t have much in common but their blossoming acting careers.

Robertson is 25. Cassidy is 13. Robertson grew up in Greenville, S.C., and recently co-starred in the romantic drama The Longest Ride. Cassidy was raised in Manchester, England, and might be best remembered as the young Snow White in the hit Snow White and the Huntsman.

Besides promising futures, they also share Tomorrowland scenes with George Clooney in the sci-fi family film. In it, Clooney portrays Frank, a grown-up version of a former boy-genius inventor who joins forces with a teen named Casey (Robertson) to discover secrets in another dimension that might save the world. Cassidy plays Athena, the girl who brings them together.

Apparently, it was left to the youngest of the trio to maintain mature order on set during filming in and around Vancouver.

“Well, I think Raffey played mom a lot, especially with George and I,” said Robertson while promoting Tomorrowland with Cassidy. “She was constantly trying to keep us focused, and funny enough that’s how she is in life, too.”

But Cassidy wasn’t a control freak. “I mean, not intentionally,” said Robertson. “It’s that she’s so professional.”

Getting to know each other on camera and off helped them bond. “We had such a great time and a lot of fun together,” said Cassidy.

They also forged a supportive attitude during their rehearsals for special-effects action sequences.

“We spent a lot of time together between stunt training and then obviously filming the movie,” Robertson said. “So I think our dynamic off-screen relationship probably helped a lot of our chemistry onscreen, as well.”

Their friendship also made the concept of Tomorrowland more believable.

“I think the relationship between Casey and Athena is quite friendly because Athena just wants to get together with Casey to save the world,” Cassidy said.

In real life, do they have a plan to make Earth a better place?

“I would like to go back to the old-fashioned times when you wrote letters to people,” Cassidy said. “I’d like to do that, but make better (ways) to get the letters to people quicker.”

“My big thing right now, living in California, is that I’ve turned off my sprinklers,” said Robertson referring to the state’s long-term drought.

“I know it’s a very small step, but I’m trying to use less water.”

I think our dynamic offscreen relationship probably helped a lot of our chemistry onscreen, as well.
