When the sun goes down

- — Craig R. Palmer

over the last seven summers, people have been flocking to Deerfoot City ( or, as it was formerly known, Deerfoot Mall) to get in on some sweet nostalgic drive- in action. The Deerfoot City Drive-In Series’ weekly offerings have progressively expanded from two to this year’s five. The fun now also includes live entertainment. The screenings go every Wednesday until Aug. 26. The series started with Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark; this week it offers the Disney- Pixar classic Finding Nemo, which promises to draw a large audience both young and old on Aug. 12. “You have to pick those fan and nostalgic favourites,” says Jasmin MacDonald, marketing manager for Destination: Deerfoot City. “It’s a fun event in and of itself, but if you have that movie that has a base of fans, they’re just going to be so excited. Maybe they see it in a setting that they haven’t seen it in before, or maybe— if it’s an older movie— it brings them back to when they first saw it back at the drive- in.” As the event becomes more popular, people are arriving earlier to secure prime parking spots before the 9: 30 p. m. show time ( the time is approximate and depends on when the sun sets). There is also space reserved for lawn chairs if you want to get out of the car. To keep the masses busy, the event offers a themed photobooth, inflatable slide, and the Gamer’s Fun Truck, a big rig lined with monitors and gaming consoles. New this year is the Bass Bus, a mobile stage for an emcee, DJs and musicians.
