Camper, 12, drowns in Osoyoos Lake

-

A 12- year- old Calgary girl drowned Monday evening at Osoyoos Lake while on a camping trip at the Swiws ( Haynes Point) provincial campground, according to Osoyoos RCMP. The girl had been camping at the site with her family, who were visiting from Calgary. She was swept off her feet by several waves while walking in shallow waters with a friend along the sand spit at the end of the campground, according to RCMP. The girl’s friend held onto her hand as she slipped into deeper water until she could no longer hang on. “The young girl did not know how to swim and was not wearing a life- jacket. She went under the water and did not surface,” it said in a statement. The girl’s body was found by an employee of the campground under approximately three metres of water after nearly 40 minutes of searching.
