City again scores high for livability
Calgary ranks fifth among the world’s most livable cities, according to a list compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Tied with Adelaide, Australia, for the fifth spot on the list, Calgary follows Vancouver and Toronto, which are ranked third and fourth, respectively.
The ranking considers 30 factors including safety, health care, educational resources, infrastructure and environment. It examines 140 cities worldwide, the most livable of which tend to be “mid- sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density,” according to the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Calgary achieved scores of 100 ( noted as “ideal” conditions) in the categories of stability, education and health care. It scored 89.1 for culture and environment and 96.4 for infrastructure.
Calgary also ranked fifth overall last year.
Melbourne, Australia, and Vienna, Austria, ranked first and second, respectively, this year and last.
But while Calgary was recognized for its livability standards, its top university was less impressive on the international stage, according to a separate world rankings list.
The University of Calgary was ranked in the 201- 300 range in the 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released earlier this week by the Center for WorldClass Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Nationally, the U of C was in a group of schools that placed between seventh and 16th among Canadian universities on the list. The University of Toronto was the top Canadian school on the list.
Harvard University remained the top school worldwide for the 13th year in a row.
