AT A GLANCE
Conservatives
Stephen Harper announced a re- elected Conservative government will bring back a “Life Means Life” bill that died when the election was called. At an event in EtobicokeCentre riding, Harper said Canadians expect to be protected from the worst type of criminals.
The Conservative government originally tabled the legislation in the spring. It proposed changing the Criminal Code to imprison offenders convicted of the “most heinous murders” and high treason for the rest of their natural lives.
NDP
Tom Mulcair promises to inject a “modest” $ 9 million into natural disaster prevention and relief as Western Canada reels from one of its worst wildfire seasons on record.
Mulcair campaigned in British Columbia, where days ago a raging blaze tore through the province’s interior, destroying dozens of homes and forcing hundreds to flee at a moment’s notice. “An NDP government will assist provinces to keep Canadians safe from fires and floods as the effects of climate change worsen,” said Mulcair.
Greens
The federal Green party wants a legislated ban on supertankers on British Columbia’s coast and a moratorium on drilling for oil and gas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Green Leader Elizabeth May outlined the proposals at a news conference, flanked by several party election candidates.
The Green party advocates embedding the right to a healthy environment in the Constitution as well as development of a national energy plan with a strong commitment to tackling climate change.
