Flames Celebrity Charity Golf Classic scores big

- BILL BROOKS

A rather chilly day Sept. 15 certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm, participation nor dollars raised at the 35th annual Calgary Flames Celebrity Charity Golf Classic presented by Scotiabank. Both the Hamptons Golf Club and Country Hills Golf Club played host to 420 golfers on 54 holes including representatives from the Flames, Roughnecks, Hitmen and Stampeders, along with management, alumni and local celebrities.

The season-launching event raised an impressive $385,000 for the Flames Foundation for Life.

Since its inception, the foundation, with the support of partners and donors, has raised millions for education, health and wellness, and amateur and grassroots sports.

Last season alone, the Flames Foundation for Life distributed more than $2.6 million.

Following the day of golf, all participants met at the Scotiabank Saddledome for the dinner reception and awards presentations.

Flames players Michael Frolik and Mason Raymond led their teams to first place in low gross and low net scores and have some new bling as a result — championship rings custom designed by Jewels by Maxime’s.

Other highlights included Flames alumnus Brent Krahn’s hole-in-one at the Calgary Sports and Entertainment/Coca-Cola hole at Country Hills which awarded him $10,000 and Flames seasons tickets.

Flames defenceman Deryk Engelland was awarded longest drive at Country Hills and Brandon Bollig took the longest drive award at Hamptons for the second year in a row.

Sean Monahan claimed closest to the pin at the Hamptons.

Others enjoying the 35th annual tournament included: Lyle Edwards, Calgary Flames Celebrity Charity Golf Classic chairman; Flames alumni Perry Berezan, Jim Peplinski, Mike Commodore and Dana Murzyn, to name but a few; Flames Ambassadors Ken McCowan and Terry Moore; Remington Development’s Randy Remington and Cody Clayton; Flames Foundation executive director Candice Goudie; Don Seaman; AirSprint’s Brennan Thomson and Sean Kellington; Safeway’s Brent Kirschner; Postmedia News’ Ed Huculak with colleagues Mike Slimm and Mike Rayburn; Vintage Group’s Lance Hurtubise; Bracko Brothers’ Carey Bracko; Flames COO John Bean with colleague Mike Franco; ATB Financial’s John Windwick; PGA golfer and avid Flames fan Graham DeLaet; Flames Foundation chairman Jeff McCaig; Rotary Flames House medical director Dr. Marli Robertson; Alberta Children’s Hospital pediatrics department head Dr. Jim Kellner; Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation president and CEO Saifa Koonar; and others pictured at right.
