Well-established new communities lead demand

Evanston, Auburn Bay top permit applications for single-family homes

- JOSH SKAPIN CALGARY HERALD

A community in northwest Calgary and another from the southeast were neck-and-neck for the lead in single-family home demand last month.

The Evanston area in the northwest led the way in applications for building permits on single-family homes in August with 28, edging the 27 in Auburn Bay, says the city’s planning and development department.

Evanston is part of the Symons Valley corridor and includes the communities of Evans-Ridge by Dream Development and Evanston by Qualico Communities.

“The reason for the high interest in the community of Evanston is that it is still a very new community that is established,” says Lawrence Wong, area manager for Innovations by Jayman in Evanston, adding schools have been a key appeal. “There are two schools — K-4 and K-9. One is under construction and set to open its doors fall of 2016, while the other is not far behind to begin construction.”

Built-in commercial amenities have also helped bring attention to Evanston, including Evanston Town Centre and Creekside Shopping Centre, Wong adds.

“The access in and out of Evanston is also very important, and in this case Evanston can access Stoney Trail East and West, Beddington Trail, Country Hills and Deerfoot within minutes,” says Wong.

Auburn Bay is a lake community in the southeast by Brookfield Residential that boasts top-notch selection, says the company’s business development manager Kelly Halliday.

“Our buyers are attracted to the great choice of homes we offer in Auburn Bay, including single family, semi-detached and townhomes. We also offer a variety of move in dates that suit everyone’s needs,” she says.

“Auburn Bay is such a well-loved, well-established community that it adds a lot of overall value to our homes. With a private 43-acre lake, year round community activity centre, two brand new schools under construction and the future green line station, Auburn Bay is really tough to beat.”

Evanston and Auburn Bay were trailed by 25 each in Mahogany and Nolan Hill. Mahogany is by Hopewell Residential, and United Communities master- planned Nolan Hill. Cityscape by Mattamy Homes and Legacy by West-Creek Developments also had a busy August with 21 permits each.

The same communities that topped August in activity for single-family permit applications also have the year-to-date lead. From Jan. 1 to the end of August, Mahogany leads with 277. Evanston is next with 233, followed by 187 in Nolan Hill, 169 in Auburn Bay and Legacy’s 151.
