McDavid ‘ out long term’

-

Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid left Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers with what appears to be a shoulder injury.

On the Oilers Twitter account, coach Todd McLellan said “he has an upper- body injury that will keep him out long term.”

With the Flyers leading 2- 1 and 1: 44 remaining in the second period, McDavid had a partial shorthanded breakaway but fell awkwardly and was ridden hard into the boards by Philadelphia defencemen Michael Del Zotto and Brandon Manning, who also lost their balance on the play.

McDavid left the ice favouring his left shoulder. He was seen wearing a sling in the hallway behind the dressing room.

McDavid, the first overall selection in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, had 12 points in his first 12 games and was named the Rookie of the Month for October.

Elsewhere around the NHL Tuesday:

Kevin Hayes snapped a tie late in the first period, Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves and the opportunistic Rangers beat the Capitals 5- 2 in their first meeting since New York defeated Washington in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals last spring. The Capitals lost for the first time in five road games.

At Boston, Tyler Seguin scored three goals against his former team as Dallas beat Boston. Boston lost centre Chris Kelly 1: 40 into the game with a broken leg. Seguin’s seventh career hat trick was his sixth with the Stars, who acquired him in a trade with Boston in the summer of 2013.

At Montreal, Kyle Turris scored 34 seconds into overtime to lift Ottawa over Montreal. It was the Canadiens’ first experience with the new 3- on- 3 overtime format. ike Condon filled in for injured Canadiens goalie Carey Price for a third straight game.

Minnesota Wild right wing Justin Fontaine has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee that’s expected to keep him out four to six weeks.

Goaltending had been the Toronto Maple Leafs’ biggest downfall this season. But on Monday night against the Dallas Stars, James Reimer finished with 43 saves and was the biggest reason for a 4- 1 victory. By stealing a game, Reimer earned himself another start tonight against the Winnipeg Jets, and perhaps beyond. “Absolutely he did, for sure,” coach Mike Babcock said. “If you’re him, you want to play every night, so to me you play good and you get to start the next game and you make sure you play good again and you get the start after that and you just keep going that way. That’s what I would do if I were him.”
