Juno Week events list for Saturday and Sunday

- Mike Bell

Saturday Junior Junos at the John Dutton Theatre in the Calgary Public Library at 10 a.m.:

If you snoozed, you “losed” on this family friendly concert. Tickets are long gone for the show featuring performances by all of the acts up for Children’s Album of the Year at this year’s Juno Awards. Those who got them and the wee ones a ticket will be treated to some silliness and tunes by acts including Big Block Singsong, Bobs & LoLo, Ginalina, Splash’N Boots and The Swinging Belles. Juno Fan Fare at Chinook Centre

from noon to 3 p.m.: Another event that’s already sold out, possibly because tickets were free, but mainly because Calgarians wanted to get up close and personal with some of Canada’s première musical acts. Those who will be on hand, signing autographs and offering brief performances for the lucky ducat holders include Marianas Trench, Dean Brody, Alessia Cara, Autumn Hill, Brett Kissel, Chad Brownlee, Dear Rouge, Shawn Hook, Scott Helman, Francesco Yates, George Canyon, Ria Mae and Walk off the Earth. Classical Showcase at Scarboro

United Church at 1 p.m.: For those who like to get classy, this showcase features a collection of some of this year’s nominees in the classical categories as well as other talented musicians. Participating artists include Elinor Frey, Jeff Reilly and Luminous Voices, John Burge, Maria Soulis, Dinuk Wijeratne, The Canadian Chamber Choir, Wild West String Quartet and Megumi Masaki.: A donation will get you in or it’s free for 25 Juno Fest wristbanders. Juno Fest takes place all night at various locations around Calgary

This is the second night of the city coming alive with national and local talent. You can still pick up a wristband from ticketfly. com and hop around the town, check out acts in many of the different venues including local progressive pop artist Hello Moth at Wine- Ohs, veteran bluesman David Gogo at The Blues Can,

Juno-winning banjo man Old Man Luedecke at the Ironwood or Calgary country rock faves Cowpuncher. And again, plan for a full night, as the music goes a little longer, and the liquor pours a little later at participating rooms. Walk Off the Earth and Marianas Trench at the Stampede Corral

at 7 p.m.: Fresh from Fan Fare, these two Canadian rock acts will take the stage of the old barn along with Mr. Bang Bang, Kieran Mercer. The all-ages show is another associated Juno Fest event, meaning that only a handful of wristband owners will be allowed in, with other tickets available from Ticketmaster.ca.

Sunday Juno Songwriters’ Circle at the Jack Singer Concert Hall at noon: It is called the “jewel” of the Junos, an event that brings the songs, stories and musicians to life. Calgary country artist and 2016 Juno nominee Paul Brandt will host an informal and intimate gathering of some of this nation’s finest musical artisans, including Matthew Good, Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle, Alex Cuba, Autumn Hill, Old Man Luedecke and Ria Mae. There are still some tickets available from artscommons.ca, but move quickly. Juno Awards at the Scotiabank

Saddledome at 5 p.m.: The big one. The 45th annual Junos will hit the Saddledome with all of the glitz and glamour that a Canadian awards show can muster. It certainly has some star power this year, from the pair of hosts, Jann Arden and Jon Montgomery, and performers such as Bryan Adams, The Weeknd, Alessia Cara and Scott Helman, to the presenters who include Paul Brandt, Nickelback and Mayor Nenshi, and hopefully some of the winners of the six awards being handed out (Drake? Biebs?) on the night. Whatever the case, the first Calgary Junos in eight years are sure to be a memorable one, be it something you experience in the Dome (tickets from ticketmaster. ca) or from the comfort of your couch ( broadcast live on CTV).
