PGA luminaries added to Shaw Classic

- SCOTT FISHER

Mark O’Meara always knew he was coming back to Calgary.

He’s had the Shaw Charity Classic written in ink on his 2016 schedule.

“Calgary and the Shaw Charity Classic is obviously one of the best on tour,” said O’Meara, one of 10 PGA major winners added to the tournament’s field on Tuesday.

“Calgary is a wonderful place, an incredible city. I love the golf course. I love the Rockies and I’m a huge fisherman.

“Floating the Bow River is a beautiful experience so I can’t wait to get back to Calgary for both the golf and to get back onto the Bow again.”

O’Meara, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame last summer, and Tom Kite will headline a group of 14 PGA major winners boasting a total of 25 titles (seven Masters, four U.S. Opens, nine British Opens, five PGA Championships) at the 2016 Shaw Charity Classic (Aug. 31-Sept. 4).

Other major titleholders who booked their tickets to the Stampede City include Mark Brooks (1996 PGA Championship), Mark Calcavecchia (1989 British Open), Todd Hamilton (2004 British Open), Lee Janzen (1998, 1993 U.S. Opens), Craig Stadler (1982 Masters), Scott Simpson (1987 U.S. Open), Jeff Sluman (1988 PGA Championship) and Bob Tway (1986 PGA Championship).

Kite adds some additional firepower to one of the deepest fields on the Champions calendar.

The 1992 U.S. Open champion, and a 19-time winner on the PGA circuit, competed on seven Ryder Cup teams throughout his career.

“I have always had a lot of fun coming to Calgary and playing in this event,” said Kite, who has racked up 10 victories on the senior tour, including one major title.

“This really is a great field coming to Calgary and you have to respect all of the guys out here. They are all very good players, strong competitors and anyone can win on any given week.

“I continue to work hard on my game. I do feel things are going well and I’m going to keep giving everything I have to winning another golf tournament.”
