Kids’ past life in Calgary part of historic week
Wednesday is the day for sports and photography lovers at Historic Calgary Week.
Kids will probably enjoy a program about what it was like to be a kid in Calgary long ago, running from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Pre-register at 403-238-8180. Then, get to the main event: a behind-the-scenes look at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, including two new exhibits, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Right afterward, dash over to Central United Church from noon to 1 p.m. for a history of the fires, feuds and general shenanigans that went into Calgary’s first “big city” intersection, at 7th Avenue and 1st Street S.W.
The afternoon features a history and tour of the Avatamsaka Monastery, the distinctive building on 4th Avenue S.W. with the Buddha, at 2 p.m.
Then, meet at 23rd Street and 5th Avenue N.W. to take a walk through West Hillhurst, formerly known as the streetcar community of Grand Trunk, at 4 p.m.
Cap off the day with a glimpse of vintage photographs of Calgary’s streets from the Glenbow Museum’s collection.
George Webber, who photographed the city for 40 years, will present some of his work, which he recently donated.
