If we need police, we need courts

Re: “Calgary Police given OK to hire 50 officers,” July 25

First, Alberta’s economy tanks with thousands of jobs lost. Then crime figures change so much that Calgary council votes to acquire 50 additional police officers.

So why is the Alberta government cutting jobs in Calgary courts? Five court clerks and support staff positions are gone in two months. The courtrooms are overfilled with people needing assistance (majority without lawyers due to financial reasons). Judges, justices and remaining clerks are so overrun; judges and justices are working during their vacation time while clerks try hard to find available courtrooms to handle the extra crowd.

NDP supporters nominated Rachel Notley to protect jobs. I guess they forgot to tell her. Jason Roberts, Calgary
