If you can catch only three events Saturday, try:
1 Cycling, men’s road race
It’s one of the prestige events of the Olympic Games and all eyes will be on Great Britain’s Chris Froome, fresh off his third Tour de France win. Among the challengers is Canadian up-and-comer Mike Woods of Ottawa, who is well-suited to this hilly course.
2 Women’s soccer
It’s Canada vs. Zimbabwe in a must-win game for the Canadian women. In a tough pool with Australia and Germany, they need a win against their only lower-ranked pool opponent to have a shot at making the quarter-finals.
3 Swimming, women’s 400-metre IM
Emily Overholt of West Vancouver hopes to build on the success she enjoyed last year, when she won three medals at the Pan Am Games, then took bronze in this event at the world championships.
And on Sunday ... 1 Diving, women’s 3-metre synchro springboard
Quebecers Jennifer Abel, below, and Pamela Ware are expected to reach the podium in this event. Ranked No. 2 in the world, they won silver at the 2015 world championships.
2 Women’s rugby sevens
Canada’s women play Great Britain in the morning, before returning for quarter-finals in the evening. Few are predicting Canada won’t make Monday’s semifinals, but much will depend on how these matches play out.
3 Swimming, women’s 400-metre free
Michael Phelps has been the face of American swimming for years, but many would argue the crown should be transferred to Katie Ledecky. She won her first Olympic medal in London at age 15, and these should be her Games. Since London, she’s won 10 world championship medals, all gold.
