Bonus room shines in Excel’s Edendale model

- JOSH SKAPIN

For many families, the bonus room is a significant space in the home.

It’s there to take in a movie, spend the evening playing board games, or to reconnect after a busy week of school or work. The Edendale show home is example of how to make this room look and feel important.

This 1,751-square-foot move-up model by Excel Homes is on display in Sunset Ridge. The Cochrane community by Melcor Developments features six park areas, five playgrounds, 5.5 km in pathways and a 2.4-hectare freshwater pond.

The bonus room in the Edendale has several elements working in its favour, starting with sunshine. Four front-facing windows help make the space bright. But it’s the sky lights, which are an option for the model, that bring the natural light to a new level.

Beyond that, the bonus room needs to be an area where people can spread out and be comfortable. With measurements of 16 feet by 12 feet, they’re getting the dimensions for large furniture, shelving units and plenty of walk-around room.

Then there’s the thoughtful location. It’s a sunken bonus room, which means it’s a few steps down from the second floor of the home, where all three bedrooms are located. This provides an extra buffer from the home’s sleep spaces.

Upstairs from the bonus room, there’s a sizable art niche, ideal for adding personality with a plant or family photo.

The master bedroom stretches along the back wall of the second floor. It’s 11 feet five inches by 12 feet and has a walk-in closet off one wall and an ensuite off another.

The ensuite has a deep soaker tub under a window and dual vanities beneath a full-width mirror.

There are two secondary bedrooms of similar size that sit sideby-side along the same wall.

One of them has a walk-in closet and the other has a large wall closet.

Also on the second floor is a full bathroom next to a laundry room with a front-load washer and dryer.

Stairs from the second to main level step out to a spacious foyer, where there’s a walk-in coat closet.

To the right, there’s a sunken mud room, which accesses a half bathroom and the attached two car garage. The back half of the main level is an open-concept design that ties in the kitchen, dining area and great room.

The cooking space is an L-shaped design and measures 10 by 13 feet.

It has a central island under pendant lighting with a sink and extended eating bar with seating for three people.

There’s an abundance of maple cabinets, full- height tile backsplash, large corner pantry and an Energy Star rated stainless steel appliance package.

The show home also displays an upgraded bistro-inspired chimney-style hood fan.
