Kenna Hughes collects course record on road to city junior title

- WES GILBERTSON

The victory goes on her golfing resume in permanent ink.

And even if another birdie-seeker eventually swipes this course record from Kenna Hughes, that’s a pretty special accomplishment, too.

Hughes, 18, made a bit of history in the closing round of the Calgary Ladies Golf Association’s City Junior last week at Carnmoney, finishing her business in just 68 strokes.

That spin of 4-under bettered the previous women’s course record at the private club by a pair of swings.

“I played one of my worst rounds on the first day of the tournament so to go break the course record on the second day, that was pretty exciting,” said Hughes, a member at Willow Park. “That was my last junior tournament so to break the course record and finish my junior career on a high note, I was pretty happy.”

After erasing the damage done by an opening-round 83 with six birdies, 11 pars and a double, Hughes headed back to the tee for a playoff with Taylor Stone (Pinebrook).

That showdown lasted five holes before Hughes chipped in for eagle to clinch the victory, adding to a trophy haul that includes the 2016 Alberta Junior Girls Championship crown. She had only days to bask in her victory at the City Junior before heading south Sunday to tee off her college career with the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers.

“There’s going to be a lot more competition, for sure, but I think that will be good for me and help take me to the next level,” Hughes said. “So I’m pretty excited for the next four years.”

AROUND THE GREENS

Scott Allred (Elbow Springs) stormed back to keep his crown at the PGA of Alberta Senior Championship. Allred was 11 strokes off the pace after the opening round at Inglewood, but he sizzled to a 5-under 66 in the second spin, surged to the top of the leaderboard and collected the hardware for the fourth time in six years. Next up for Allred and his club pro pals is the PGA of Alberta Championship this week at Edmonton Petroleum Club. Dustin Risdon (National Golf Academy at McCall Lake) is the reigning champ at the two-day shootout … Calgary’s Annabelle Ackroyd (Silver Springs) took her show on the road, finishing 22 shots clear of the competition at the Edmonton City Junior. Ackroyd, who turned 15 this month, and Pincher Creek’s Ethan Choi will be shooting to defend their titles this week at the Alberta Bantam Championships at River’s Edge in Okotoks … Calgary’s Chris Patterson and Jordan Kopelchuk were among those who scored bragging rights at the Alberta Golf Tour Championship, a four-day shindig in B.C.’s East Kootenays that included tournament rounds at Trickle Creek, Wildstone, Shadow Mountain and St. Eugene Mission. Patterson won the championship flight, while Kopelchuk was tops in the A flight.
