Premier Wall owns Waylon’s old wheels now

Saskatchewan leader buys car once owned by legendary country singer

-

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall is sporting a new ride — a white Cadillac convertible once owned by country music legend Waylon Jennings.

Wall’s hobby is collecting classic cars and he bought the 1973 Eldorado after recently selling his 1967 Dodge Coronet.

The premier says he’s “kind of been nerding out” about the purchase.

“I’m a huge Waylon Jennings fan. I really like that outlaw country stuff and I’ve always liked Waylon,” an enthusiastic Wall said Monday in an interview with The Canadian Press.

Wall said he has other Jennings memorabilia, including gold records purchased through the country singer’s estate auction and a plaque from when Good Hearted Woman was nominated for a Grammy.

But then word came that the car was for sale.

The premier said RCA Records bought the caddy for Jennings in 1973.

It has the name Waylon embroidered in the middle of the leather seat. Jennings put almost 80,500 kilometres on the car before giving it to his son, Buddy.

The country star’s bass player, Jerry Bridges, also owned the Cadillac for a while.

There have been requests on Facebook for the premier to show the car around the province.

“I’d happily take it across the province, if I have time to be able to do that. People in Saskatchewan, you know, they’re car buffs. There are also a lot of country music fans. There’s a lot of Waylon fans, I’ve discovered as well.”

The Cadillac was supposed to be unveiled at a charity event, but Wall said a tire blew out and debris damaged the radiator hose.

The caddy was repaired and made its Saskatchewan debut at a car show in Wall’s hometown of Swift Current on the weekend.

“The ride’s pretty smooth,” he said.
