Jobless workers should be consulted
The article identified some key points in terms of immigration, not the least of which is how to attract immigrants to where they are most needed. The offering of English lessons after work is a creative and valuable aid in this respect.
Nevertheless, I wonder how broad the circle of input to the minister was. Local businesses and organizations working with immigrants are mentioned. However, were there any unemployed workers in this or any other of the consultation?
Surely, these people could provide input on why they are reluctant to move to small communities and what it would take to encourage them to move and put down roots. If the unemployed were not directly represented, perhaps the minister could reach out to them before finalizing any recommendations.
After all, what is the benefit of increased immigration if they do not want to go where they are needed? Paul Seaman, Calgary
