Kids get big chance to score training time with soccer star
Canada’s most dominant soccer player will be sharing her incredible skills during a one-day clinic with young players.
Christine Sinclair, captain of the national women’s team, is the star attraction at the Allstate High Performance Soccer Clinic on Oct. 15.
“She is absolutely the best player to come out of Canada. Anytime you can bring one of the best soccer players in the world to Calgary to meet kids at the grassroots level, it’s an exceptional opportunity,” said Daryl Leinweber, executive director of Calgary Minor Soccer Association. “And the price is incredible — free!”
Players aged 11 to 16 can register for a chance at a coveted spot in two sessions at the Calgary West Soccer Centre, 11014 Bearspaw Dam Road, N.W. A random lottery will be held to draw 200 names from all the entries. Details can be found here.
This is the second time Sinclair has been to Calgary to meet young players. She did a meet and greet in 2013 with Calgary teammate Erin McLeod and Karina LeBlanc.
“I’m so impressed by the women’s national team. They get it. They understand about role modelling and the enthusiasm they bring to the grassroots,” said Leinweber, who noted that the timing of this visit couldn’t be better following so soon after the Olympics.
“They bring their love of the game back to Canada and to the kids.” The Allstate Insurance Company is teaming up with Canada Soccer to provide the unique experience to learn from one of the best. Sinclair is Canada’s all-time leading scorer and has represented the country for 15 years.
An attacking midfielder, Sinclair has played in four FIFA Women’s World Cups and is a two-time Olympic bronze medallist, including at the recent Rio Games. She is also a 12-time recipient of the Canada Soccer Player of the Year award and nominated as the FIFA World Player of the Year six times.
Allstate also has a contest to win a school visit by a member of Canada’s national soccer team.
