Wounded officer now at home
Suspect in machete attack at mall still recovering from gunshot
The Calgary police officer badly injured in a machete assault at a northeast mall has been released from hospital, say police.
But the man who allegedly slashed him and was in turn shot by the officer once again failed to appear in court Tuesday due to his wounds.
Antonio Philip Bautista, 24, was scheduled for a first court appearance Tuesday after injuries suffered Sept. 17 kept him confined to hospital.
He also missed a court date a week earlier due to his admission to intensive care with a critical gunshot wound.
The Calgary Police Service said the officer will recover at home for some time yet before returning to work.
On Sept. 17, police were called to the LRT platform near Marlborough Mall following reports of a man attacking people with a machete.
A suspect was chased into the mall’s Sears store, where the bloody confrontation ensued.
Bautista is charged with assaulting a police officer, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and breaching a probation order.
He already had a warrant out for his arrest at the time of the incident and was in Rockyview Hospital’s psychiatric ward several days before that.
He had been admitted by police under the Mental Health Act but later released.
Bautista is now set to appear in court Nov. 1.
