Big blue ring is not a work of art

-

Re: “Big blue ring reflects modern city,” Letter, Sept. 27.

What people like Kirk Layton fail to realize is that a big blue ring is not art, it is structure.

The German company that was paid $471,000 to build a steel ring with wires inside ran all the way to the bank to make sure the cheque would clear. If the ring is art, then every light post and fire hydrant in the city is also art. And if that is the case, then the big blue ring is just another light post and was nothing more than a waste of money.

Art is supposed to generate discussion, but only as to composition and significance, not whether or not it actually is art. Larry Martin, Irricana
