Inn From the Cold receives warm donation

Fridge repair bill to be paid by donor

An anonymous donor has stepped up to pay the entire $10,000 repair bill after Inn From the Cold’s main walk-in refrigeration unit broke down.

The shelter had made an appeal to Calgarians for help, acknowledging the difficult economic times that have led to both a drop in donations and an increased need for its services.

The food stored in the fridge helps feed upwards of 120 people each night.

“We received a call from a generous anonymous donor who heard this story and generously donated to pay for the entire cost of our fridge repair,” said Janeen Murphy-Web, director of donor relations.

“We also received additional donations after people hearing about this.

“We are so grateful for the support of Calgarians, our donors and the media for their support of Inn From the Cold,” she added.

Had the problem not been fixed in such a timely fashion, it could have been a disaster.

“We’ve been overcapacity and to lose the ability to store perishable items when cooking for 120 people a night, it’s not good,” she said.

“Right now we have perishable items stored in every cooling receptacle in the building.

“The folks over at the Mustard Seed are also helping us out with storage.

“It’s put a restriction on the amount of food we can bring in,” said MurphyWeb.
