Coin toss determines Law’s return to Stamps

If the Stampeders end up winning the Grey Cup this season and Cordarro Law plays a significant role, Calgarians will have one very lucky coin to thank.

On Wednesday, the Stamps announced that the defensive lineman would be returning to the team after a couple seasons with the NFL’s San Diego Chargers, and while Law’s familiarity with the organization makes it a happy homecoming, the decision wasn’t an easy one.

“To be honest, it was between Calgary and another team, it was neck and neck,” said the 27-yearold. “I didn’t know who I was going to go with, I didn’t know at all.

“Me and my girlfriend were sitting there talking and she said, ‘Flip a coin. Heads it’s Calgary, tails Ottawa’ and it fell on heads so it was Calgary.”

After two seasons with the Chargers during which he recorded 21 tackles and one sack in 17 games, Law began having conversations with three or four CFL teams about a return north of the border.

While his final decision came down to a flip of a coin, he sounded like a man who was happy with the way the fates had conspired to bring him back to the Stampeders on Tuesday.

During his time in Calgary, Law made major contributions on the defensive side of the ball. He recorded 15 sacks and 46 defensive tackles in 18 regular season games during the 2012 and ‘13 seasons and helped the Stampeders go all the way to the 2012 Grey Cup.

They fell short in that game, though, and Law admitted that it was hard to resist the appeal of a 2016 Stampeders squad that has the makings of a team that could go one step further and bring home the championship.

“The year I left Calgary (2014), they went back and won the championship the next year,” Law said. “We had that great run and then the year I leave, they come back and win the championship?”

While there’s been plenty of turnover on the Stampeders in the time since Law left, there’s still a core group of players who Law has kept in touch with. Charleston Hughes, Junior Turner and Micah Johnson are among the guys he remains close with, so finding his place in the locker-room shouldn’t be especially difficult.

The question is where exactly he’ll fit into the rotation. The Stamps expect him to be at practice on Thursday, but it’s extremely unlikely that Law will be hopping on a plane and flying back across the country later in the day and suiting up during Saturday’s game in Hamilton against the Tiger-Cats.
