Ross Roy is enjoying his new role after joining Stantec earlier this year as a principal of its architectural practice in Calgary.

The Calgary office already had more than 80 architects and interior designers, who work on major projects across Western Canada. Roy was hired to head up a new department that focused on commercial, retail and mixeduse developments.

It’s not the easiest time to go after new business in this city, yet Roy has been very busy with a number of projects in his first few months.

Stantec’s Calgary office enjoys a master agreement with CIBC to build new and update its interior functions across Canada, and is now working on a new branch in Saanich on Vancouver Island for client First Capital Realty.

It designed the new 100,000-square-foot final phase of the Preston crossing shopping centre on a nine-acre site in Saskatoon.

The development is a joint venture between Calgary-based Ronmor Developers and the University of Saskatchewan, which owns the land and generates $1.8 million annually from it for student scholarships.

Other clients keeping the Calgary staff busy include Rio-Can, and the firm is currently working on the exterior of its Signal Hill Shopping Centre to update the design.

An exciting project as a collaborative effort, involving all of Stantec’s disciplines working with the architectural group, is the design for luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue, which is opening a two-level, 116,000-square-foot store in the former Target space at Chinook Centre.

Stantec’s architectural team has been awarded an interesting project to help SAIT Culinary Campus develop a new location, in addition to its existing space in Scotia Centre. The new venue will house a new academic program — Post Diploma in Culinary Entrepreneurship — with the aim of teaching students the business side of the food industry including management, merchandising, branding and marketing.

In partnership with Clark and Scott Builders, Stantec was selected to be the design build team for Red Deer College’s Centre for Health, Wellness and Sport. It will provide flexible classroom spaces and living laboratories, as well as supporting current and new programming in kinesiology, health sciences and education, and will be used during the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

“This facility is more than just a building, it is about ensuring a bold, forward-focused future for the communities of central Alberta,” said Red Deer College president and CEO Joel Ward.

The City of Calgary selected a partnership of Stantec, Maple Reinders, Nasson and Bird Construction to design and construct its new organic waste composting facility. AIM Environmental Group will operate the venture.

Stantec’s design is for three buildings that will process 100,000 tonnes of source-separated organics and leaf and yard waste per year, along with 45,000 tonnes of bio-solids, a wastewater treatment byproduct.

The facility, the largest of its kind in Canada, is well underway and scheduled to be ready to accept materials by spring of next year.

Stantec is also working with Brookfield Residential on its “Ivy” project in the University District for the West Campus Development Trust.

NEWS AND NOTES

I first met Brian Stone when he was the owner of Stonehaven Projects, which managed the development of western Canadian Place for Trizec and Husky, and the Keynote towers working for Balboa. He graduated from SAIT in 1974 to pursue a career in the construction industry but 30 years later went back up the hill, this time to Alberta College of Art and Design to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts. A recreational painter most of his life, Stone decided to devote all of his time to his passion and, when he’s not painting at home, can be found at his Stonewater Studio in Invermere. Stone is holding a show of his work at Michel Arseneau’s Inglewood Fine Arts Gallery from Oct. 27 to Nov. 7.
