AROUND TOWN WITH BILL BROOKS
Our man shines a light on the city
It is increasingly difficult to maintain a positive, upbeat, attitude in our fair city, with the challenging economic news seemingly having no end in sight.
And yet, attendance to — and support of — philanthropic events can do just the trick to lift one’s spirits. The recent Interlude in support of the Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute (ABJHI), held in the home of Ann McCaig, was uplifting indeed. The select group of roughly 100 guests in attendance had a marvellous evening, all the while raising funds for ABJHI. An unforgettable performance from Tommy Banks and Jens Lindemann — 2016 JUNO award nominees for their album Legacy Live — as well as surprise guest 11-year old piano virtuoso Kevin Chen and the McKenna Family Five, proved the perfect musical performances.
Interlude was the latest incarnation of the hugely successful Music in Motion series that started in 2010.
Three concerts were held from 2010-2012, raising more than $3 million to further the shared vision of two of Alberta’s greatest community leaders — Dr. Cy Frank and J. R. (Bud) McCaig. Their vision was simple: to raise funds for world-class research in bone and joint health.
Headliners The Canadian Tenors, Nikki Yanofsky, the CPO and Alberta Ballet delighted audience members at the three concerts, while 2015 saw the return of the series with Encore, featuring Holly Cole.
Apt indeed to finish the run with an intimate evening — Interlude — in the home of Music in Motion co-chair Ann McCaig.
Guests in attendance this night included: Helen Fitzpatrick; Joan Andre; Ella Joy Mabin; Joan Cameron; Betty Stein; Dr. Stephen Weiss; Art Korpach; ABJHI executive director Martin FergusonPell; ABJHI board chair Ian Robinson; ABJHI COO Chris Smith; Dr. Deborah Marshall; Dr. Dianne Mosher; Brookfield Residential’s Alan Norris and his wife Shelly; Shane Homes’ Cal Wenzel and his wife Edith; Dick and Lois Haskayne; Irene Besse; Jane and Roxanne McCaig; Calgary Health Trust’s Jill Olynyk; and event producer, Brooks and Dodd Consulting’s Tom Dodd.
