FAMILY AND FRIENDS

How people interact a key consideration to Wakefield design by Morrison Homes

- CLAIRE YOUNG

The Wakefield floor plan knows that for many, family life revolves around the epicentre of the dining table, whether it’s getting together on a daily basis or when entertaining.

Morrison Homes’ estate show home in Legacy, a community by WestCreek Developments in Calgary’s south, caters to this desire. The main floor of the 2,864-squarefoot triple car garage home invites family bonding.

The kitchen island, which holds the double sink, faces the dining area on one side, while the great room with its fireplace bookends the other side. A sun room off the kitchen provides a casual nook, in this case with a built-in window seat with storage. Windows on two sides provide views of the ravine below and of the back deck, which has its access through sliding doors next to the dining table.

The sliding doors make it easy to transfer food from an outdoor barbecue to the table. If desired, there is a building option to enclose the sunroom, with French doors opening into the room.

The front part of the home is set up to simultaneously create an impression and be fully functional. In the front foyer, a curved staircase open to the second floor inspires grandeur. From the triple-car garage, the mudroom, meanwhile, is large, with room to stage an expedition requiring full winter clothing for the family. A walk-through pantry, home management centre and a half-bathroom round out the functions of the main level.

Upstairs, the grand staircase turns into the bonus room, a spacious affair at 17 feet eight inches by 15 feet. It’s large enough to house a sectional to sprawl on while watching movies, as well as a couple of desks or reading chairs.

Near the bonus room, French doors open onto an anteroom, with the master bedroom to the left and the master ensuite, walk-in closet and access to the walk-through laundry room to the right.

The window side of the master bedroom is bumped out, providing a light-filled space for reading chairs. The bedroom is made cozy by a two-way fireplace on the opposite wall, shared on the other side with the freestanding tub in the ensuite.

The ensuite is designed for the luxury experience — spacious, with a double sink vanity, smooth tiles underfoot with a ledger rock surround for the tub area, along with a glass walled shower.

The convenience of housing the ensuite and the walk-in closet down the hall from the main bedroom is helpful to minimize disturbance for partners on different schedules. Being able to walk through into the upstairs laundry from the dressing room adds convenience.

At the front of the home, two spacious bedrooms with lots of closet space give children of any age plenty of room to spread out in.

The lower level of the home is a walkout facing out to the backyard and the ridge. The focus of this show home is on entertainment, with a pool table and full wet bar in the main space. Double doors on the home theatre room mean that the movie watchers can enjoy surround sound without everyone else in the home living the experience, too.

A large bedroom, a full bathroom and storage round out the rest of the lower level’s offerings.
