IT TAKES A VILLAGE

Journey Club offers it all

- JOSH SKAPIN

People looking for a place to retire to can now buy at a development that puts them a short walk from an assortment of places to eat, shop, and a substantial amenity centre.

Pre- construction sales have launched at Journey Club by Jayman Built at Westman Village.

The three-building development offers units for independent living, assisted living and memory care.

Phases dubbed Journey Club 2 and 3 are composed of 145 condos for independent living that are now available for purchase. At Journey Club 1, there are 77 units for independent living, along with 40 with services for assisted living, and 21 for memory care.

Journey Club 1 will have a combination of rentals and units available for life lease, and is expected to come to market in late winter or early spring.

At Journey Club 2 and 3, floor plans start at 696 square feet. One-bedroom condos start from $282,000, while two-bedroom floor plans start at $448,000. In both cases, prices are before tax.

They come with high-end finishes, full kitchens and spacious decks.

Journey Club is one of four residential segments at Westman Village, including apartment-style condos, estate bungalows, and purpose-built rental.

Connectivity is central to what makes the entire Journey Club development an attractive place to live, says Wallace Chow, vicepresident of development for Jayman Built Multi-Family.

“Some of the other retirement communities, they’re very nice,” says Chow. “They offer a lot of the things that we offer, but they don’t offer it as an integrated package with the rest of the community.”

The 5.5-hectare Westman Village is a unique, resort-like development, planned within the greater southeast lake community of Mahogany. It features an assortment of dining and boutique shopping options, along with 35,000 square feet of amenities at its Village Centre.

Linked to Journey Club through a series of Plus-15s, the Village Centre will boast a wine cellar for wine tasting and storage of up to 5,000 bottles, an arts and crafts centre, woodworking room, fitness, spin and hot yoga facilities and two swimming pools — one for lane swimming and another for aqua aerobics that connects to a two-storey waterslide.

There’s also an indoor garden, library, terrace, multi-purpose room, movie room, golf simulator, party room with a wet bar, games room, a demonstration/communal kitchen for cooking classes, running track, and a half-court gymnasium.

“There are so many activities,” says Chow. “If you want to work out, work out. If you want to go to the library and do something there, fine. For people who want to enrich their lives in education, we have a lecture hall. There are chances for people to invite other lecturers. Or maybe they themselves will do a travel session and say, ‘Hey, I went to the Galapagos Islands. Let me put on a slide show.’”

Journey Club will also have a restaurant as part of the development. Chow says is was important to deliver something that was a step up from the cafeteria setting commonly seen other retirement developments.

“We said, ‘ let’s bring in some restaurant-grade interior designers, let’s bring in people who have done hotels,” says Chow. “And we can offer a dining experience that is more like a regular restaurant.”

Westman Village will also have a steak house near Journey Club.

“Everything within this whole village is within walking distance,” Chow says. “We went to great pains to make sure, if you were on a scooter, if you were in a wheelchair, if you were on a skateboard, you could wheel around to 95 per cent of the site without hitting a stair.”

Westman Village has sales centres at 1955 Mahogany Blvd. S.E., and 100-3132 118th Ave. S.E. They’re open 2 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
