Smart design enhances living space at Colorado

- JOSH SKAPIN

For many families, the second floor central bonus room is an integral part of the home.

Whether it’s to gather for a movie or help put the finishing touches on the school science fair project, it’s a place to connect.

It’s also part of a clear commitment by Calbridge Homes to make its Colorado duplex feel and function like a single-family home. The space efficient 1,615-square-foot model with a single-car front attached garage is presented as a show home in the Cochrane community of Fireside by La Vita Land.

Duplexes in Fireside have been a successful combination for Calbridge. At the Calgary Region SAM (Sales and Marketing) Awards handed out in 2015, the builder picked up trophies for two duplexes in the community. The wins helped earn Calbridge the title for Multi-Family Builder of the Year.

The bonus room in the Colorado isn’t just a token space either. As the show home indicates, staged with a generously sized couch, chair, table, and work station, it’s designed for a growing family. It directly links to both a full bathroom and laundry room, too.

The bonus room also acts as a buffer between the parents’ and children’s bedrooms, which are at the front and back of the floor, respectively.

At 12 feet eight inches by 13 feet, the master bedroom is comparable to what’s found in some singlefamily homes. It features an expansive window, walk-in closet with a white wire organizer, and ensuite.

Meanwhile, the secondary bedrooms are similar in dimension and sit side-by-side. They come with large wall closets and windows that overlook the backyard.

For larger families, an optional developed basement allows for a fourth bedroom and additional bathroom. A media room is possible with this option, as well.

The bright main level keeps welcoming places to gather top of mind.

This starts at the kitchen. There’s so much space between the island and features along the wall, making it convenient for family and friends to visit or help prepare the meal.

The island has an extended eating bar that seats two people and a sink that faces the dining area and great room through an openconcept design. Above the island, eyes are drawn to stylish Edison light fixtures.

The kitchen boasts a stainless steel appliance package, including an over-the-range microwave, full-height backsplash, and corner pantry.

The open design helps pull natural light across the main floor. A prime source for sunshine is off the rear wall with a sliding glass door and a series of tall windows. A side wall window chips in with this, as well.

While storage isn’t always the most exciting part of picking the right floor plan, it’s something many buyers come to appreciate later. A place to tuck away ski equipment and the Christmas tree makes sense for an assortment of demographics.

In the Colorado, a walk-in closet attached to the mud room helps accommodate just that.
