WHO TO WATCH

Flames: LW Micheal Ferland To say that Ferland is having a career year is an understatement. With 12 goals and seven assists in 60 games — including five goals in the last five games, the game is coming easy to him. The 24-year-old is confident and he should be, especially on a line with LW Johnny Gaudreau and C Sean Monahan. He’s bashing, he’s crashing, and he’s making space for his linemates while creating plays. And it isn’t even the postseason yet.

Red Wings: LW Henrik Zetterberg At 36-years-old,’ Z’ still has what it takes to contribute at the NHL level. No, dominate at the NHL level. The future Hall of Famer and Detroit captain is on a four-game point scoring streak with a goal and six assists in his last four games. The elder statesman of the group is enduring a difficult time with the rebuilding Red Wings, but is still determined to be a leader. A treat to watch, and there aren’t going to be many more opportunities to watch him.

WHAT’S IN THE TANK? Flames: Full Red Wings: Half HOW THEY MATCH UP

Forwards: Flames Contributions have come from all four lines lately.

Defence: Flames Since the addition of Michael Stone, this group has made limited mistakes.

Goaltending: Flames Brian Elliott is 5-0 in his last five starts.

Power Play: Flames Detroit’s PP is the worst in the NHL.

Penalty Kill: Red Wings Calgary’s PK has been leaky lately and Detroit has the 15th-best unit in the NHL. Intangibles: Flames We’ve said it before: it’s tough to bet against this club right now. Overall: Flames The Flames are rolling.

SETUP NOTES

Detroit general manager Ken Holland was a busy man in February, trading Tomas Jurco, Steve Ott, Brendan Smith and Thomas Vanek for a second-round draft pick, three third-rounders, a sixth-rounder and minor-league defenceman Dylan McIlrath. The Red Wings have made the Stanley Cup playoffs for 25 straight seasons and haven’t drafted in the top-10 since 1991, when they plucked Martin Lapointe at No. 10. More often than not, the Red Wings are trying to improve their team for the immediate future at the NHL trade deadline. But this year, it’s finally caught up to them. “I’d do it all over again to get four Stanley Cups and six Presidents’ Trophies and be in the playoffs 25 straight years,” Holland told NHL. com … The Red Wings bucked the trend of teams losing out of their NHLPA-mandated bye week, beating the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in overtime on Monday … Friday against the Flames is the second stop of a five-game road trip. They play in Edmonton on Saturday … This is the final meeting between the Flames and Red Wings this season. The last time these clubs faced off was on Nov. 20 in a 3-2 Flames’ win in Detroit. Calgary was struggling while LW Johnny Gaudreau was shelved with a broken finger, and scored by committee with goals from Garnet Hathaway, Matt Stajan, and Mikael Backlund.
