FLAMES 5, ISLANDERS 2

THREE STARS:

- — Wes Gilbertson

1. C Sean Monahan, Flames — Led attack with a goal and a helper. Johnny Gaudreau provided a pretty assist on his goal and he tried several times to return favour. 2. LW Matthew Tkachuk, Flames — You won’t find his name on scoresheet, but he was arguably Calgary’s finest forward. Impacts the game in so many ways.

3. G Brian Elliott, Flames — Another stingy performance for the man they call ‘Moose.’ Racked up 33 saves.

WORTH NOTING: Thanks to their thumping of the Islanders, the Flames have now celebrated seven straight victories. You have to go way back to Nov. 1-16, 2005, for the last time the crew from Calgary rattled off eight wins in a row. The current cast will be shooting to equal that feat in Thursday’s home meeting with the Montreal Canadiens … With an assist on RW Kris Versteeg’s thirdperiod tally against the Islanders, Flames D Matt Batkowski collected his first point in Calgary’s colours … Prior to Sunday’s puck drop, Flames G Brian Elliott was feted as the winner of the Sportsnet Three Star Cup for February. The 31-year-old netminder posted a 6-1-1 record, a 2.40 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage last month … The Flames continued to stick with the same forward lines and defence pairings, with C/RW Freddie Hamilton, C/RW Curtis Lazar and D Dennis Wideman once again scratched. Hamilton and Wideman have now been spectators for seven consecutive contests, while Lazar arrived on deadline-day but is still waiting to debut in the Flaming C … Islanders RW Andrew Ladd will be back at the Saddledome on Wednesday to be officially welcomed as the second inductee to the Forever A Hitmen program. He’ll join his former junior linemate, Ryan Getzlaf, in that exclusive club. Now 31 and a two-time Stanley Cup champ, Ladd was a fan favourite in his two campaigns with the Hitmen from 2003-05, racking up 49 goals and 120 points in 136 regular-season skates. He’ll be honoured in a special banner-raising ceremony before the Hitmen host the Saskatoon Blades.
