LOCAL BUILDERS UP FOR AWARDS

CHBA announces the finalists

- CLAIRE YOUNG

Calgary area’s builders and developers took more than a third of the finalist positions in the new home categories at the upcoming CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence, snagging 26 of 68 places. Calgary area companies also took 16 per cent of the finalist positions in the marketing awards, with eight of 50 spots.

“These awards are about excellence and recognizing the very best in Canadian new homes, home renovations, community development and marketing across Canada,” said Kevin Lee, chief executive officer of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, in a news release.

This year, 39 awards will be presented at the association’s national conference on May 12 in St. John’s, N.L. Based on the final placements in the category results, two major national awards will be presented: one for Design Excellence (derived from final standings in the 14 new homes categories — not including renovation, community development or net zero categories) and one for Marketing Excellence (from standings in the 10 marketing categories). To win a major award, a company must also win an individual category.

There were a record number of entries this year. More than 70 judges contributed to the job of selecting the finalists.

“With so many exciting and innovative projects to choose from it was a challenging task, and it took a practical army of judges from coast to coast to do it justice,” Lee said. “The process also makes it a huge honour to win.”

Eighteen Calgary-area companies netted finalist positions.

Homes by Avi (Calgary) and Kon-strux Developments each col- lected nine finalist nods. Homes by Avi holds seven in new homes categories and two in marketing. Homes by Avi includes recognition for both homes on its single-family side, as well as its multi-family division, Avi Urban. While most of Kon-strux’s strength lies in its renovation categories, it was also nominated for a custom home build.

Brookfield Residential (Calgary) received six nominations, with two in new homes and four in market- ing. The Albi Luxury by Brookfield Residential division was responsible for three of these placings.

Ultimate Renovations and Alloy Homes each received five nominations.

Remington Development Corp.’s Champagne development in Quarry Park received three nods in the new homes division.

Each receiving two finalist positions in various categories were these Calgary-area companies: Empire Custom Homes, Homes by Dream and Astoria Homes.

Receiving one finalist nomination each were Crystal Creek Homes, Douglas Homes, Heritage Pointe Properties (for community development of Artesia at Heritage Pointe), McKinley Masters Custom Homes, NuVista Homes (Augusta Fine Homes division), Premium Renovations, Rusch Projects, Stepper Homes and Treehouse Developments,
