Ducks GM upset with Giordano’s hit on Fowler

- WES GILBERTSON

Tempers flared Tuesday between the Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks.

Apparently, the dust hasn’t settled just yet.

The Ducks revealed Thursday defenceman Cam Fowler will be out anywhere from two-to-six weeks with a sprained knee, the result of a collision with Flames captain Mark Giordano, and Anaheim’s head honcho didn’t hold anything back when asked about the hit.

“The big thing in hockey today is concussions but I still, as an old player, have no use for knee-onknee hits, and especially if I think they are somewhat intentional,” Ducks general manager Bob Murray told the media in Anaheim. “I hear how Gio is a good guy, and he’s this and he’s that. The media in Toronto is saying, ‘Well, he’s a good guy.’ Well, he’s done this before. I have no respect for people who go after knees. I’m sorry but knees, they wreck your careers real quick. I don’t like it.

“I know I’ve said too much, but I don’t care.”

After Tuesday’s 3-1 loss in Anaheim, Giordano told reporters that he was simply trying to stop Fowler from sneaking through to the Flames’ net and that he didn’t mean to connect with the Ducks’ player knee.

“He came through the middle with a lot of speed and I was honestly coming across to make a hit on him,” Giordano said.

“I have to watch it again, but I think our legs collided, I don’t know how bad. I just hope he’s OK. You don’t like to see, obviously, guys get hurt. There was no intent to hurt him there.”

Giordano scrapped with Ducks defenceman Josh Manson during a fight-filled third period at Honda Center, with the two teams combining for 106 penalty minutes in the final stanza.

The Flames and Ducks could possibly meet in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
