FIVE LIVE SOUNDS

The week includes a Little Scream and a Low Roar.

-

Friday: Little Scream

“Love as a Weapon,” the lead single off Laurel Sprengelmeyer’s (a.k.a. Little Scream’s) sophomore album, was heavily influenced by Prince. She even worked with David Z, who worked on Purple Rain. Unfortunately, the album was released just two weeks after Prince died, so he never heard it. At Commonwealth Bar and Stage, 731 10th Ave. S.W. 7 p.m. $14.99. TF.

Friday and Saturday: Saturday Night Special 40th Anniversary Festival Weekend

A big-number anniversary needs a big celebration. Saturday Night Special adds a night and brings in The Beagle Boys, The Heebeejeebees, James Keelaghan, Paul Hann and UHF. At Braeside Community Centre, 11024 Braeside Dr. S.W. 7 p.m. saturdaynightspecial.ca.

Monday: San Fermin with Low Roar

San Fermin produces the kind of layered pop music that you’d expect once you learn that its bandleader, Ellis Ludwig-Leone, studied composition at Yale University. The band’s crew includes two vocalists, a trumpet player, a violinist, a saxophonist, a drummer and two guitarists. At Festival Hall, 1215 10th Ave. S.E. Doors, 7 p.m. $25. TF.

Wednesday: Chamber Music from the Mountains

String-quartet season in the mountains is typically late August; the Banff Centre is looking to extend it this year with a festival featuring past winners, including last year’s The Rolston String Quartet. This spring concert heralds that fall celebration. At Studio Bell, 850 4th St. S.E. 7:30 p.m. $40.25. 403-543-5115, studiobell.ca.

Thursday: Jazz Cartier

The Toronto rapper comes through town on his Secret Garden Tour; given that his album Hotel Paranoia took Rap Recording of the Year over Drake’s Views at the Junos this year, that garden might not be a secret too much longer. At Music Calgary, 1140 10th Ave. S.W. 9 p.m. $25. TF.
