A third option for flood mitigation

-

Re: Tsuut’ina Nation vows to oppose Springbank dam; NDP defends flood mitigation plan, denies claim of lack of consultation, March 9

Springbank Reservoir and McLean Creek options do not meet the required capacity to store 100 million cubic metres of water, nor protect us who live upstream of Calgary, in Redwood Meadows (Tsuut’ina land) and Bragg Creek.

I fully agree with Chief Lee Crowchild about the problems with Springbank since Redwood Meadows was almost wiped out had there not been amazing volunteers.

The good news is that there’s a new option that’s been studied — build a “TriRivers Joint Reservoir” at the headwaters of the Elbow, Sheep, Highwood which is in Kananaskis.

This approach provides water management of three rivers and can store water if there is drought.

Springbank is definitely not faster given landowners concerns, nor cheaper since cost is over $1 billion for the entire project — a bridge on Highway 22 is over $400 million for example.
