COMMUNITY GARDEN

Plots take root in Legacy

- JOSH SKAPIN

Residents of an award-winning community in southeast Calgary will soon be pulling out their trowels, cultivators, and gardening gloves.

Legacy by WestCreek Developments has announced details around its organic community garden, and people who are interested can now sign up to use the plots. While the garden is still under construction, it will be ready starting May 15.

“The community garden has been part of our plans since the beginning,” says Kalida Goldade, WestCreek’s marketing manager. “We wanted something to, again, bring people together.

“It’s how we’ve designed the entire community to be — to create opportunities for interactions with your neighbours,” she adds.

Legacy was crowned Community of the Year-City of Calgary for the second straight year at the recent Calgary Region SAM (Sales and Marketing) Awards.

“You can really grow whatever you want — from vegetables to plants,” says Goldade of the garden.

The garden will have 65 beds. These plots will be either three feet by four feet or three feet by eight feet in size.

“None of the new communities in southeast Calgary feature a community garden, so this is something really special to the community of Legacy,” Goldade says.

The garden is at 404 Legacy View S.E., just down the street from new move-up show homes slated to open in June.

WestCreek is donating the garden to the Legacy residents’ association, which will maintain it going forward.

People interested in more information or taking on a plot are encouraged to go to the residents’ association website legacyresidents.ca/garden

“We’ve had an overwhelming de- mand for it already,” Goldade says. “There are a ton of residents really excited.”

On May 1, residents who signed up will be notified if they have a plot.

“It does rotate, so every member in the community will have the ability to have a plot over the next couple of years or so,” Goldade says.

Residents will have either one or two years of time with the community garden, depending on the plot.

Jeff Cryderman, area sales manager for Stepper Homes in Legacy, likes what the garden will bring residents of the community.

“It’s a great concept,” he says. "I think it brings them a great opportunity to socialize and form a bond that says, ‘this is my community, here’s my involvement in it.’

“It definitely increases the pride in the neighbourhood,” he adds.

Joining Stepper, builders in Legacy include Albi Luxury by Brookfield Residential, Calbridge Homes, Morrison Homes, Sterling Homes, Trico Homes, WestCreek Homes, Jayman Built, Shane Homes, Aldebaran Homes, Carlisle Group, and Brad Remington Homes.
