COOKING IN HARMONY

Plum dishes up smart design

- JOSH SKAPIN

Some of the most enjoyable experiences cooking a meal can come from a group effort. A couple, or parent and older child, each covering a step in getting dinner underway.

To create a harmonious, functional space for multiple chefs, the kitchen design needs certain ingredients. And it doesn’t take a large single-family floor plan to support it.

The Plum by Brookfield Residential is a 1,000-square-foot townhome with a kitchen that has the space, design and specifications for an enjoyable evening of chopping, dicing, and sautéing.

It’s displayed as a show home for the Link at Evanston development, in the northwest Calgary community of Evanston. A similar development by the builder is underway in the nearby community of Symons Gate. Here, a townhome called the Mikado shares similar qualities to the Plum, and is available for immediate possession.

Evanston is a master-planned community by Qualico Communities that has more than two kilometres of pathways and 19.8 hectares of green space. It’s also close to multiple commercial developments, with grocery stores such as Costco, Sobeys, Co-op, Walmart, and Loblaws City Market.

The Plum’s L-shaped kitchen features substantial stretches of counter space in a generous 14 foot two inches by 10 foot 11 inch area covering the back end of the main floor. It revolves around a central island with an extended eating bar that comfortably seats three. The island sits beneath stylish pendant lighting.

This entire area is designed for the ability to circulate freely. There’s a thoughtful amount of space between the island and kitchen features along the wall, making it easy for more than one person to be mobile and not feel cramped. It’s also a welcoming format for guests to gather and socialize.

Adding to its free-flowing theme is the dispersion of appliances, with the fridge and dishwasher on one side of the kitchen and the oven and over-the range microwave on the other. These appliances are stainless steel.

For storage, there’s a pantry and 42-inch cabinets. As displayed in the show home, the light-toned cabinets are an attractive balance with its dark coloured floors.

The kitchen sink sits under a large rear-facing window that serves as one of many sources of natural light on the main level of the townhome. This dedication to sunshine continues into the front-facing great room and central dining area, with well-sized windows in each.

On the ground level, there’s a spacious garage that links to a large area earmarked on the floor plan as undeveloped storage space.

The top level is bookended by two master bedrooms.

This flexible format matches the needs of a variety of living arrangements, such as roommates, families with one child, and a couple or single person needing a guest room.
