Architect Dan Jenkins has earned numerous awards since launching his own firm in 1981, designing some dramatic buildings that earned him the title “King of Kensington.”

Cafe Calabash Restaurant was the first, before he completed a 10,000-square foot retail complex on Kensington Crescent. The project was followed by The Pointe retail and office building, which remains a landmark, flatiron structure in the area.

For many years, Jenkins Architecture was housed in the Beltline district, but has since relocated across the river to Bridgeland, across from The Piazza, the mixed-use building he designed on the former General Hospital site.

More recently, Jenkins has specialized in designing multifamily residential and mixed-use projects and is now working on three luxury complexes.

Breaking ground this week is the Residences of King Edward by Rockwood Custom Homes on the 17th Street S.W. edge of the repurposed King Edward School site, already occupied by the artsbased C-Space.

The project includes 19 twoand three-bedroom flats ranging from 1,400 to 2,500 square feet. The largest is an impressive 3,600 square feet in a threestorey structure. The exterior features a lot of Alberta sandstone mixed with Alberta wood and Rheinzinc cladding. The front yards of each of the ground level suites are defined by low sandstone pilasters and wrought iron fencing with a cotoneaster hedge.

Jenkins has been associated with Canada Lands Corp. since he was contracted to provide the design, site planning and architectural codes for Garrison Woods on CFB Calgary lands in 1997, and for Garrison Green. The firm designed the recently completed nine 3,000-square foot town houses for Empire Custom Homes in the first phase of Valour Park on Currie Barracks, and is at work on the next two phases.

Pre-marketing is about to commence for 26 condominium units, ranging from 1,450 to 1,735 square feet. The final phase will consist of 52 units in a four-storey building.

Jenkins was also responsible for the master planning of East Village as a consultant, one of many projects that go back to his master plan for the 700-acre Angus Glen Village in Markham, Ont., completed in 1993.

NEWS AND NOTES

Marketing and digital agency AdFarm has a deep connection with the agricultural industry, and even operates three farms of its own. The Calgary office, which relocated from Mission to new space across from Chinook Centre, is working on a project for the Alberta Wheat Commission, called Life’s Simple Ingredient, which focuses on giving people permission to feel good about eating wheat grain.

Sports have always been a big attraction for Calgary, and for a third straight year we welcome the Canadian Open Judo Championship, at the Olympic Oval from May 24 to 28. Last year, the event attracted 1,500 spectators a day to see more than 800 athletes compete.
