Stamps’ QB Mitchell strives to improve

The final pieces of the Calgary Stampeders’ pre-season puzzle are finally in place.

With less than 24 hours until rookie camp begins, the Stampeders added four players to their roster, including their final unsigned player from this month’s 2017 CFL Draft.

Tunde Adeleke was selected in the third round, 25th overall, by the Stamps after seeing action for the Carleton Ravens as both a defensive back and a kick returner.

Based on Stamps president/GM John Hufnagel’s comments after making the selection, it sounded as if the team intends on using him more on special teams.

“He’s an excellent returner,” Hufnagel said on draft night. “He’s five-foot-10, 190 pounds and had the fastest 40-yard time at the combine.”

Adeleke was the last remaining draft pick to be signed by the Stamps, as the team announced last week the seven other players they had selected were all signed to rookie camp contracts.

He wasn’t the only lastminute addition, though, as the Stampeders added three other internationals on Wednesday.

That included D’Nerius Antoine, a linebacker out of Southern Mississippi who attended a rookie camp this year with the Chicago Bears and played both defence and special teams in his college days.

Mike Ross will be fighting for a spot on the defensive line. The 24-year-old attended New York Giants training camp last year after four years at North Carolina State. Receiver Kevin Smith, a Washington product, signed a contract, as well.

Smith played seven regularseason games and two playoff contests for the Seattle Seahawks in 2015.

The Stampeders also announced three guest coaches who will be attending 2017 training camp.

The list includes former Stamps receiver Jabari Arthur, who is now the receivers coach for the University of Calgary Dinos, as well as Laval offensive line coach Carl Brennan and Lindenwood University defensive backs coach Chris Royal.
