Fans pack Spruce Meadows for final day of National Tournament
Fans revelled in the sunshine Sunday for the final day of the National Tournament, capping off a memorable start to Spruce Meadows’ Summer Series.
The tournament, which began Wednesday, featured some of the world’s best show jumpers, culminating in an impressive zerofault performance by American Richard Spooner in the CNOOC Nexen Cup Derby.
Spruce Meadows senior vicepresident Ian Allison said spectators were treated to a rare display in the International Ring.
“The winner jumped only the fourth clear round in the history of the event,” Allison said.
“As (Spooner) said, more people have walked on the moon than have jumped a clear round in the Nexen Cup.”
Canadian Chris Surbey also enjoyed a podium finish in third place, and Mexico’s Luis Alejandro Plascencia came in second.
More than 35,000 people came out to take in the derby Sunday, bringing the National’s total attendance to 66,058.
While show jumping was the main focus over the past few days, many Spruce Meadows attendees Sunday also took in the popular FireFit competition for first responders.
“It brings a new respect to what (those) first responders are up against every day,” Allison said.
Looking ahead to what is on tap for the rest of the summer at Spruce Meadows, Allison said there are some exciting and affordable events for families.
Father’s Day will coincide with the second tournament in Spruce Meadows’ Summer Series.
The Continental Tournament on Sunday, June 18, will feature the CP Grand Prix, as well as a number of family-friendly activities on the grounds and no admission charge at the gate.
On Canada Day, Calgarians can take in a philharmonic orchestra performance in the evening on the Founder’s Plaza after a full-day of sport, a military fun run and other entertainment for kids.
“Regardless of whether you’re coming out here for the sport or not, you can just come out and soak up the summer,” Allison said Sunday.
