‘LOVE TRIANGLE’ BLAMED IN KILLINGS

3 found dead at campground for Quebec swingers

MONTREAL• Camping Adam et Ève bills itself as an adults-only destination where “liberated people” can live out their sexual fantasies.

But police say the freelove spirit was shattered this week by old-fashioned jealous rage, leaving three campground regulars dead.

Quebec provincial police allege a jealous ex-lover in his ‘70s shot his former partner and her new lover before taking his own life. Police called to the site Monday afternoon found the bodies of Suzanne Gareau, 50, Rodrigue Tremblay, 77, and Denys Carpentier, 76.

Carpentier is believed to have killed the others before turning a revolver on himself. “It’s probably linked to a love triangle,” Sgt. Claude Denis of the Sûreté du Québec said.

Martin Sanfaçon of the Quebec Coroner’s Office confirmed that the victims appeared to have died from gunshots. A revolver was discovered on the scene, he said through a spokeswoman.

People at the campground in Sainte-Brigitte-des-Saults, about 100 kilometres northeast of Montreal, told TVA that Gareau had recently split with Carpentier and moved in with Tremblay, who stayed in a cottage on the campground. They said the two men had been close friends.

Carole Dussault told Radio-Canada that Tremblay “was more than a good person. He was an elderly man with a big heart, and he helped everyone he loved.”

The campground has made waves in the past, accused by the provincial federation of nudists of blurring the line between nudism and swinging, which involves the exchange of sexual partners.

“It’s a very sad event that has happened, but it has nothing to do with nudism,” federation spokesman Michel Vaïs said.

He said Adam et Ève opened in 1972 as a nudist camp, but it transformed into a destination for swingers.

In 2014, the municipality of Sainte-Brigitte-des-Saults sought to shut down a Swingers’ Festival at the campground but received legal advice that there was nothing it could do. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 2005 that swingers clubs are legal.

The Adam et Ève website promotes a number of upcoming events, including a “sexy western festival” later this month and a fantasy festival in July.

“No fantasy is abnormal, even the hardest, because everything remains imaginary,” the site says.

Writing on the campground’s Facebook page, one regular said its focus is “freedom, fantasy, libertinism.” She said it’s a place for people with open minds. “You don’t go there to play bingo and pétanque,” she wrote.

A man who answered the phone at the campground Tuesday morning said he had nothing to say about Monday’s killings.

Photos on the website show small cottages available for rent and parking for camping trailers. There is a swimming pool, a hot tub, a disco bar and nature trails.
