Calgary police seize guns during ‘high-risk’ vehicle stop
Four people are facing charges after a traffic stop led to the seizure of an assault rifle and a sawed-off pistol grip rifle.
Calgary police said Wednesday they received a report just before 11 a.m. Saturday of four men at a southeast convenience store who were seen to have rifles and were spotted getting into a darkcoloured Honda Civic.
Around 12:30 p.m. the same day, members of the Calgary police gang suppression team saw a vehicle that matched the description and conducted a “high-risk vehicle stop” in the area of 17th Avenue S.E. and Stoney Trail S.E.
Officers recovered an SKS rifle in the vehicle loaded with 16 rounds in a guitar case, and a loaded, sawed-off pistol grip rifle in a backpack.
The occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody and charged.
Staff Sgt. Mark Hatchette of the Calgary police strategic enforcement unit said the four men are known to police.
Officers are also hoping for help from the public to identify another vehicle that was seen in the convenience store parking lot at the same time as the Honda Civic.
At the time of the traffic stop, a “funeral” card could be seen on the driver’s side of the windshield.
Police say they are looking into the possibility that the occupants of the vehicle were connected to the funeral of Rinato Toy.
Joseph Wol, 50, Achol Jal, 20, Tong Mawiir Tong, 21, and Achuil Chol, 30, are each charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of an unauthorized weapon, hazardous storage of a firearm and prohibited firearm with ammunition.
