The premiere of this four-part documentary tells the stories of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre — one the son of a Brooklyn, N.Y., longshoreman, the other straight out of Compton, Calif., — and their improbable partnership and roles in contemporary culture. Allen Hughes (Menace II Society) directs. Part 1 begins with Dr. Dre in Compton, where his fascination with dance music, DJ innovations and sound leads him to become part of N.W.A. Meanwhile, Iovine works his way up in the recording industry, building a reputation as a talented producer. (HBO)
