Calgary-shot Wynonna Earp picked up for third season

The paranormal sci-fi modern western Wynonna Earp has been granted more life after being picked up for a third season.

The announcement was made during the series panel at the San Diego Comic Con on Saturday by show creator, and former Calgarian, Emily Andras.

The series will continue to air in the U.S. on Syfy and on Space in Canada.

According to a news release sent Saturday by Space, Wynonna Earp has seen its total audience more than double in Canada with a 52 per cent increase compared with Season 1. Season 2 of the show airs Friday nights on SPACE, after the Ontario-based CHCH aired the show in its first season.

Wynonna Earp, which is produced by Calgary-based Seven 24 Films, has become a cult success in both Canada and the U.S. Its second season has received positive reviews and maintained a loyal following of “Earpers.” Season 2 was shot mostly in Calgary and Springbank.

It stars Melanie Scrofano in the title role. The actress’s real-life pregnancy was incorporated into the show’s second season. In the July 7 episode it was revealed that her character was pregnant.

In the series, Earp is the descendant of legendary lawman Wyatt. Due to a family curse and aided by a supernaturally enhanced Peacemaker, she battles paranormal baddies in the town of Purgatory. In June, Vanity Fair described the show as “shockingly entertaining and undeniably funny, generally on purpose” and “intensely watchable.”

The series also stars Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Tim Rozon and Shamier Anderson. Syfy and Space have ordered 12 new episodes for Season 3, which will air in 2018.
