Virtual Cliffhanger available to Canadian Open fans

- WES GILBERTSON

It’s a favourite golf getaway for Calgarians, one of the must-plays in the Canadian Rockies.

This week, the signature hole at Greywolf Golf Course in Panorama, B.C., is being spotlighted for another audience.

One of the attractions in the spectator village at the PGA Tour’s RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey is the opportunity to take a crack at Greywolf’s stunning sixth, known as Cliffhanger.

Fans will hit their tee-shots in a simulator and then an attempt to sink their birdie putts on a replica green.

A giant banner has been printed to show off the scenery on the postcard-pretty Par-3.

“We know that Cliffhanger draws a lot of people and it should, because it is one of the best golf holes I’ve ever played.

“I can’t think of a hole like it anywhere in the world,” said Totem Golf’s Dane Thorogood, the general manager for both Greywolf and Sundre Golf Club.

“I always see people taking pictures and selfies with their foursome on that hole. I feel like I should have a selfie stick leaning up against the fence for people to use, because that’s how often I see it.”

Cliffhanger stretches to 200 yards across Hopeful Canyon, a knee-knocking fire at a green that teeters on a rocky ledge.

It really is a gotta-see-it-to-believe-it assignment, but fans at the RBC Canadian Open in Oakville, Ont., will at least get the picture.

The same setup will be used again at Golf Canada’s other marquee professional event — the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open next month in Ottawa.

“For us, it just reinforces how good that hole is,” Thorogood said. “There are so many great golf courses in Canada and we were chosen with Cliffhanger. … That’s pretty cool.”
