Dawgs showing some bite in WMBL

-

Call it a rabid fan base backing the Okotoks Dawgs.

With a record-breaking attendance record of about 4,000 fans per game, the Dawgs are being supported by the masses in their quest for a Western Major League Baseball crown.

And in return, the club is giving their supporters quite the show.

With just seven games remaining on the regular-season schedule, the Dawgs — with a sparkling 30-11 record — have clinched first place in the WMBL’s Western Division.

Coming off a Saskatchewan road trip — one that saw the Dawgs go perfect in six games — the Okotoks club not only boasts the best record in the WMBL but is also the first team to reach the 30-win mark.

Currently, the Dawgs are 71/2 games ahead of the Edmonton Prospects — the only team that could catch them in the standings — and would win the head-to-head tiebreaker if the two were to finish the regular season with the same record.

The 2017 campaign has been one for the record books in Okotoks.

On the field, Matt Lloyd out of Indiana University is currently leading the WMBL in average, hitting .417 and riding a franchise high 21-game hitting streak. Kody Funderburk out of Dallas Baptist has blown the rest of the league out of the water when it comes to hitting home runs — his leagueleading 13 blasts are four more than Broderick Rodocker of the Regina Red Sox. At the back-end of the bullpen, Tyler Burdett of Dixie State leads the WMBL in saves with 12.

And, of course, off the field, the Dawgs are getting huge support.

The Dawgs host the Lethbridge Bulls on Tuesday at Seaman Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
