Peters suspension a touchy subject for Esks

Did Garry Peters contact an official as much as an official backed into Garry Peters?

Either way, the Edmonton Eskimos defensive back is not on the practice field this week after getting suspended for one game due to an objectionable conduct penalty late in Thursday’s win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

He had just been flapjacked at the line of scrimmage by Ticats receiver Jalen Saunders and appeared to be voicing his displeasure while trying to get the attention of one of two officials who bolted in between the two players in efforts to de-escalate the situation.

In the end, Peters won’t be suiting up for Friday’s first-place battle against the B.C. Lions.

Eskimos head coach Jason Maas said it all by saying nothing when asked Tuesday if the suspension was deserved.

“I don’t want to comment on that, to be honest with you,” said Maas, who has already doled out no small amount in fines during his rookie year as a head coach in 2016. “I’m not going to comment on it, I’d just as soon not. He’s suspended and what’s done is done.”

JONES RETURNS

Former CFL offensive lineman Andrew Jones, who won one of his three Grey Cup rings with the Eskimos in 2015, is back in Edmonton, this time to coach with the junior Wildcats program.

“Really looking forward to coaching defensive line for the Wildcats,” the six-footthree, 315-pound native of Toronto tweeted Tuesday.

“Going to be a great season.”

Jones won Grey Cups in B.C., Toronto and Edmonton, the first three stops of a 10-year CFL career that brought him to Saskatchewan last season.

HAVE ARM, WILL TRAVIS

It will be student vs. mentor in Friday’s clash at Commonwealth Stadium, as Lions head coach and general manager Wally Buono confirmed Tuesday that Travis Lulay will be his starting quarterback, with Jonathon Jennings potentially coming off injury to dress as backup.

His Eskimos counterpart, Mike Reilly, studied under Lulay in Vancouver for two seasons after arriving to the CFL in 2011.

They last took to the field against each other in the 2015 pre-season, while their last regular-season starts that coincided happened in back-to-back weeks in July 2013.

He’s suspended and what’s done is done.
